Biography

Mohamed Anwar Hadid is a Palestinian-American real-estate developer known internationally for building luxury hotels and mansions in Southern California. Born in Nazareth in 1948, he comes from a Palestinian family that left after the establishment of Israel; his father did not want the family to live under occupation. The family moved through Damascus, Tunisia, and Greece before settling in the Washington, D.C., area when Hadid was a teenager. Educated in Virginia and later at North Carolina State University and MIT, Hadid began his entrepreneurial life restoring and reselling classic cars in Georgetown, then opened a nightclub in Greece and used the proceeds to enter American real estate. Over the following decades he became one of the most recognizable developers of ultra-high-end residential property in the United States. Hadid built his reputation on landmark Los Angeles projects, including Le Belvedere in Bel Air, which sold for tens of millions of dollars, and other large estates in Bel Air and Beverly Hills listed at the top of the market. His developments helped define the contemporary mega-mansion category and made him a fixture of the American luxury property world. His public profile expanded further through his family: he is the father of the internationally famous models Gigi and Bella Hadid, who have repeatedly highlighted their Palestinian heritage in global media. This visibility has made Hadid one of the most widely recognized Palestinian-Americans in popular culture as well as in business. Throughout his career Hadid has been outspoken about his Palestinian and Arab identity, connecting his personal story of displacement to his work and public statements. While his developments have also drawn legal and regulatory disputes, his standing as a globally known Palestinian-heritage entrepreneur in luxury real estate is well established across mainstream and reference sources.
