Biography
Hani Al-Masdar was a Palestinian footballer and coach who became the head coach of Palestine's Olympic national team. Born in 1981 in the central Gaza Strip, he began his playing career at Al-Maghazi Club before joining Gaza Sports Club, where he played until retiring in 2018 and moving into coaching. Within the Palestinian football system Al-Masdar rose to lead the country's Olympic and youth development program, joining the Olympic team's technical staff in 2021 and eventually serving as its general coach. In a context where developing young Gazan players meant working with minimal facilities under blockade, his role placed him at the center of the next generation's hopes of international competition. Al-Masdar was killed on 6 January 2024 in an Israeli airstrike on his home village of Al-Musaddar in the Deir al-Balah area during the Gaza war. His death was widely reported internationally as a marker of the toll the war was taking on Palestinian sport, with the Palestinian Football Association and global outlets covering the loss of one of the program's leading coaches. His killing came to symbolize the destruction of Palestinian sporting infrastructure and human capital in Gaza, where coaches, scouts and players were among more than a thousand sportspeople reported killed. Al-Masdar is remembered both for his contribution to youth football and as one of the most prominent figures in the toll documented by international observers.
