Biography
Hanan Daoud Khalil Ashrawi is a Palestinian scholar, legislator, and diplomat who became the most prominent international voice and public face of the Palestinian cause during the peace process of the early 1990s. Born in Nablus in 1946 to a Christian family, the daughter of physician Daoud Mikhail, a founding figure of the PLO, she earned her doctorate in medieval and comparative literature from the University of Virginia and built an academic career at Birzeit University, where she chaired the English department. Ashrawi rose to global prominence as the official spokesperson of the Palestinian delegation to the Middle East peace negotiations from 1991 to 1993, beginning with the Madrid Conference. Articulate, fluent, and forceful in English, she reframed how Western audiences understood the Palestinian position, becoming a familiar presence on international television and a respected interlocutor in diplomatic circles at a time when few Palestinians had such access. Her career has combined institution-building with principled independence. She served as the Palestinian Authority's first minister of higher education, founded the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens' Rights and the civil society organization MIFTAH, and was repeatedly elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council. Within Palestinian politics she became known as a leading advocate for democratic accountability, human rights, women's participation, and transparency. A longtime member of the PLO Executive Committee, Ashrawi resigned from that body in 2020 in a public gesture widely read as protest against the stagnation and lack of reform in the Palestinian leadership. Throughout her career she opposed corruption and authoritarian drift within Palestinian institutions while remaining a fierce critic of occupation, embodying a liberal, secular, and democratic strand of Palestinian nationalism. Ashrawi stands as a pioneering Palestinian woman in diplomacy and public life, internationally honored for her advocacy of human rights and peace.
